The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008 (Krugman)

The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008 (Krugman)

The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008 was the first important book on economics that I read as part of my MBA program. Paul Krugman makes it easy to understand why the Great Depression happened, and justifies the use of the most effective tool we have available to stop recessions from turning into depressions. Before reading this book, I was more critical of the U.S. Government's rescue of the big banks during the Great Recession. This book made me realize that while the government rescue did in fact reward banks and bank managers for unacceptably poor risk management, we used the only tool available to us that has been effective in turning back the tide of significant economic contraction.

Equity Risk Premiums by Country July 2026

Professor Aswath Damodaran (NYU Stern) is one of the world's foremost teachers, researchers and practitioners of corporate valuation. His go-to-textbook on Investment Valuation offers a hands-on framework for valuing a company by calculating the present value of forecasted future cash flows, adding present day asset values (e.g. cash, non-operating assets), and subtracting present day debt to arrive at a rational equity price which can be compared to the current stock price. Doing valuation well is the underpinning to rational markets.

U.S. Debt

U.S. Debt

Someone asked me the other day if I was a Democrat or a Republican. I definitely lean Democrat on social issues, but I can't be a Democrat or Republican when I consider what both parties have presided over for the last 40+ years. It's the largest debt accrual in the history of nation-states. When you take into account Debt-to-GDP the picture softens, but it's still dangerously irresponsible.

This is a tragically sad story which is alarmingly representative of the experience of indigenous peoples throughout the world. After almost 30 years, there are scenes from her book that I still clearly remember.

Global Capital’s Break With the U.S.

Global Capital’s Break With the U.S.

this is a heavy one, in more ways than one.

Here's my best shot at a summary by quote: "For investors, the case is clear. Forward-looking return projections based on income yields, earnings growth and currency dynamics imply materially lower expected returns for US equities than in the past, and significantly higher return potential in emerging markets. Allocating more capital to faster-growing, less-correlated economies offers the prospect of higher long-term returns with lower overall portfolio risk."

"For the global economy, the benefits are broader still. A more balanced allocation of capital reduces global imbalances, lowers systemic fragility, and channels savings toward the parts of the world where the marginal return on capital is highest. It deepens local capital markets, lowers financing costs where they are most binding, creates much-needed jobs, and supports a more resilient development model, boosting overall global growth."

International Investment in the U.S.

hmmm, it may actually be the American Brand in a lot of ways. Don't mess with it or with globalization.

"The world is incredibly long on the U.S. (to the tune of $27.6 trillion)," says Brad Setser, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. "It's not so much that people need to be convinced to hold onto their U.S. assets, but to buy more. Given the geopolitical whirlwind emanating from Washington, convincing the world to stick with the U.S. right now may be a tough sell."
