About this site and Devon
In Filipino ikaw means you. Soft is for software. So the idea is “you soft” or “software for you”. I discovered the word ikaw from Johnoy Danoa’s beautiful love song Ikaw at Ako.
I have been working with computers since 1979 when my dad brought home an Apple II Plus from work. My dad thought I should learn more about computers and programming because it was the future. He had a PhD in Engineering from Northwestern and chose computers for his field. Back then I thought programming was boring but picked up a little BASIC. On a kind of related note, when I was 17 years old I told my dad I wanted to skip college and be a singer-songwriter. He asked me to go to college and choose something safer for a career. I did. Dad was probably right. 😄
This started as a domain name to use when moving my Disaster Recover Tracking application from one place to another. Shortly after it became a simple list of my Facebook and LinkedIn posts for
search engines to pickup. Then I thought, “hey, maybe I could do something fun with this” which is what you hopefully find
today.
Thanks very much for visiting.
When I was five years old I visited Venezuela for the first time --my father's homeland. I was fascinated by the sights and sounds of visiting a new country with new people speaking a new language in a new culture. I love travel, world music, food from all over the world, and international news and politics. I lived in Ghana for a year while working with an organization whose mission was to bridge the digital divide. After returning to the United States, I worked for an organization that addresses the problem of school teacher supply and quality in low income communities. I now happily work on mission-critical business systems for a global information services company. I have had the opportunity to work with people from all over the world including India, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Ghana and the Philippines. My wife is from the Philippines. We have been married for 21 very happy years with many more to come.
