Paul Krugman makes it easy to understand why the Great Depression happened, and justifies the use of the most effective tool we have available to stop recessions from turning into depressions. Before reading this book, I was more critical of the U.S. Government's rescue of the big banks during the Great Recession. This book made me realize that while the government rescue did in fact reward banks and bank managers for unacceptably poor risk management, we used the only tool available to us that has been effective in turning back the tide of significant economic contraction.
